Artist Statement

Travel is a way to free your spirit and educate the mind.

I have a real sense of curiosity of the world beyond my present view. I want to learn more about the juxtaposition of both the simplicity and complexity of the world we live in. The earth and all it’s wonderful places is just awe inspiring and that is what makes life worth living.

My mixed media work consists oil paint, copper enamel, encaustic, metal and found objects. My use of bright and bold colors reflect what my mind craves. I like to present the big picture without getting too bogged down in the details. But attention to detail is also important.

MyInspiration for my recent body of work came from travels to locations such as Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Iceland, Japan, Alaska, and Africa. My trips to the remote, surreal, “other worldly” parts of Arctic Norway and Iceland helped me see the beauty in starkness and desolation. A summit of the highest mountain in Japan, Mt. Fuji, helped me realize that I can do what I set my mind to do. An Alaskan adventure helped me see that the environment is at risk and we must make the effort to save this planet for future generations. A safari in South Africa helped me see that the other beings that we share this planet with are suffering because of our greed and carelessness.

My dream is to see as many areas of this world as I can. Planet earth is my muse and I relish in her endless inspiration. I hope to learn a much as possible from her until my time is through.

Don’t miss Shelly’s Final Friday event, Wunderlust: Paintings and Mixed Media by Shelley DeBlase January 27th, from 6-9pm @ Studio 180 Salon. This show will run through March 2017.
