Artist Statement:

Paintings that look life-like offer great pleasure. But paintings that feel like life–always open and coming into being, both believing and doubting–offer even greater pleasure. They can be figurative or abstract–or usually both–as long as they feel like life. This is what I’m trying to do.

I am inspired by modern artists, especially the cubists and expressionists. Working this way means play, exploration and (a safe form of) risky behavior. I like to entertain a variety of possibilities and make up rules so I can then break them. I also like to revisit perceptual painting–realistic portraiture and still life– from time to time to contemplate light, form and color. The great Jasper Johns said it best:

“Sometimes I see it and then paint it. Other times I paint it, and then see it. Both are impure situations, and I prefer neither.”
